Catharine Hanekom

Catharine Hanekom is a District Ecologist with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Provincial Conservation Agency in the South African Province of KwaZulu Natal. Catharine uses camera traps extensively in protected areas for priority species monitoring, for example lion monitoring in Tembe Elephant Park. Other species of particular interest are meso-carnivores such as brown hyena, and elusive species such as serval. The cameras are also used for species inventories. Managing the large volume of photos is problematic and so systems are needed to facilitate this process.
